About the piece

During my time at Concordia College, my friend Obediah Bauer asked me to write a trombone piece, which he first played at a recital in fall of 2011. Later Dr. Nat Dickey, the trombone professor at Concordia, asked about recording it – and you can now find it as a part of his Collaborations album on Apple Music, Spotify, etc. Both Obe and Nat have performed the piece multiple times in different settings, and their support for the Sonatina has been a great encouragement to me. I’m used to writing for as many instruments/voices as possible, but this piece proves you don’t need a big group to convey beauty, excitement, and a sense of adventure.

Sonatina was premiered in the fall of 2011 by Obediah Bauer at Concordia College.
